まず、I.E.

title 「Seeing is believing.

タイトルは毎年指定されていて、本年度は "How to Best Enjoy My School Days" でした。
さんとS.M.

How to Best Enjoy My School Days

“One,two,three…”-Can you guess what I count? I count smiles.

I love my school. I have many good friends and good teachers. I also can get good education. But I have only one problem about my school. It is that my school is too long a way from my house. I take trains to school for two hours every day and there is no friend who lives near my house. So I had had a great difficulty killing time on the train. One day I conceived a bright idea. “I’ll try it,” I said in my mind.

I started it when I was in the first grade of elementary school. I vividly remember the day when I tried counting smiles for the first time. The smile I first counted was my next-door neighbor, Kenya’s. He was smiling with his grandfather in their garden. I counted as many smiles as possible. All of them made me so happy. I fell into the habit of counting smiles. However I stopped it when I was in the higher years of elementary school because I had no free time.

“Ok, I’ll try it again,” I thought.  “A woman is smiling with her baby. She is the first!” “Oh, there are the second and the third! The young man gave up his seat to the old lady. Both of them look happy,” I said in my mind. “And that office worker holding a cake box is sleeping with smile. Maybe today is his wife’s or child’s birthday. What a kind father he is.”  I enjoyed counting smiles, forgetting time. Their smiles made me happy. I found myself absorbed in finding happy scenes. Even the noise of train sounds like a great music while I’m thinking about happiness of people around me.

Everyone has each life and happiness. They show it to me by smiling. And I come to like them in an instant. However, probably, I will never see them again in my life. It really hurts. So, when I get off the train, I hope that every person I counted will be happy and smiling tomorrow, too.

I don’t need to worry about how to kill time now. Your smiles make my school life perfect. So, please smile when you get on a train, or I can’t count yours! (388words)

How to Best Enjoy My School Days

Study, study, and study. Why do I have to study? I sometimes stopped and thought about the question. Studying without a goal is somewhat empty. My beloved grandfather gave me a clue to the answer.

My grandfather died three years ago. This spring, we found many documents on his desk. His life experience was written in them. I got very interested, and asked my grandmother about his life.

He was born as a landowner’s oldest son. He was intelligent, and was a hard worker. He loved to study. His classmates always asked him how to solve problems. However, he was forced to go to agricultural high school. His parents said to him, “Don’t study. You don’t need to go to college. You only have to engage in farming.” In those days, it was common for the oldest son to take over the family business. His younger brothers and his friends went to high school and college. How frustrated he was! He went a different way from them. Nevertheless, he wished to study. While the whole family was fast asleep, he studied his younger brother’s textbooks hard by himself. He studied secretly under a quilt with light from a flashlight. His strong will never let him compromise. One morning, he pretended to go to do some farming, and took the entrance examination for a prestigious university. He passed! While he did some farming, he researched hard. He got a doctorate at last.

There were many twists and turns, and he stamped his feet in frustration many times. Nonetheless, he stuck to his will to the end. I generally respected him. While he was alive, he had never told me to study, but said to me, “Do anything you want to do.” He always supported me, probably because he couldn’t study though he was eager to study.

Now, times have changed. Our generation is called Satori Sedai―no ambition, no particular desire. Our life has been becoming more and more convenient. We’re rich in things, but our life is empty.

What would he think if he saw my current situation? I like English movies and songs, so I belong to ESS club. It’s a new club, and we sing songs, and read through scripts together by trial and error. The club has a homey atmosphere, and I’m enjoying it with like-minded members. I’m beginning to feel affinity for English little by little, and started to cherish a dream. I’d like to visit strange countries, and meet many foreigners who have different views. In order to fulfill it, I have to learn more. That’s why I have to study. It won’t be easy to study. In the future, I’ll get into difficulties, and feel despair. But I have friends, and we can work hard together. My teachers and my family stand by me. And, above all, where there’s a will, there’s a way. This is what I’ve learned from my grandfather, and how to best enjoy my school days.      (497 words)

I.E. さんとS.M.
